30 Years New Zealand's Most Awarded Winery

Since 1979, Villa Maria wines and talented winemakers and viticulturists, past and present, have been honoured with more awards both nationally and internationally than any other New Zealand winery.

In the early 1960s, Villa Maria’s owner Sir George Fistonich decided to enter his wines into award competitions and tastings.

Some of his earliest accolades were received in 1962 at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards, now New Zealand’s oldest and most renowned wine competition.

Over the years, every Villa Maria variety has received at least one and in most cases numerous awards.

In particular, Fistonich and his team of winemakers have celebrated many trophy wins for Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, Gewurztraminer, Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon, Noble Riesling, Pinot Gris and other varietals.

In addition, five of Villa Maria’s senior winemakers, including George Fistonich, have received a ‘Winemaker of the Year’ Award. Some, like current Group Winemaker Alastair Maling MW (Master of Wine), have received it more than once.

To commemorate a rich thirty year history of awards success, Villa Maria is proudly adorning all 2009 vintage wines with a gold sticker stating ‘New Zealand’s most awarded wines for 30 years.’
