Fabian’s involvement in the wine industry started at an early age working at his family’s West Auckland wine business followed by a vintage at Villa Maria Estate in the late 1970’s.
By his early 20’s Fabian had vineyard, winery and wine retail experience, including successfully project managing a number of winery building and tank farm extension projects.
In his mid-20’s Fabian completed the two year Wine Diploma course at Roseworthy College in South Australia. Following a vintage as winemaker at Krondorf Winery in Australia, Fabian returned to New Zealand to manage the building of Penfold’s Winery in Gisborne. His subsequent career path involved winemaking and wine sales followed by a position operating a manufacturing, importing and service business.
Fabian rejoined Villa Maria in 1998 where he has since project managed the design and construction of the company’s Marlborough and Auckland wineries. He was appointed to Villa Maria’s Board in 2006 and elected to the New Zealand Winegrowers Board in 2012.
Fabian has been driving sustainability at Villa Maria since 1998 and has been instrumental in embedding social, environmental and financial sustainability into the core of the company’s culture. Under Fabian’s management the company became the first major New Zealand wine producer to achieve CEMARS (Certified Emissions Management and Reduction Scheme) certification and BioGro Organic certification from the vineyard to the winery.
In 2010 Fabian was presented the Sustainability Champion Award at the NZ Sustainable Business Network Awards recognising his contributions in this area. Two years later he collected the 2012 Supreme Green Ribbon Award at Parliament in Wellington, recognising Villa Maria’s outstanding and on-going contributions to protecting New Zealand's environment.
