Dr Mike Pratt is a business advisor, author, professional director, and part-time Professor at the Waikato Management School, University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand.
Mike has provided advice and training to a range of global and New Zealand organisations for the last fifteen years in peak performance, organisation development, leadership, and sustainability. He is a sought after speaker on these topics. He has provided peak performance development services to the chief executives and top management teams of leading global corporations, such as Saatchi & Saatchi, Procter & Gamble, Carrefour, Visa, Novartis, Braun and Publicis Groupe.
Mike’s company Sustainable Enterprise Ltd provides performance development services to high growth export led companies and government agencies in New Zealand to assist them to clarify their Purpose, business models and strategy and develop inspirational leadership. The company has assisted more than 200 organisations in recent years, including 15 New Zealand New Zealand government ministries and agencies.
Mike was born in Cambridge, England and obtained a BA Economics (Honours) from Sheffield University, a masters degree from the University of Witwatersrand and a doctorate in Finance from The University of South Africa. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1972 in London, and is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants. After working in the motor industry for several years, he lectured in accounting at East London University. He was Associate Professor of accounting at the University of Witwatersrand and Professor and Chairperson of Accounting and Finance at Massey University before joining the University of Waikato.
He joined the university as its Dean of business in 1990 and served in that role until 2007. During his tenure as Dean of the Waikato Management School became one of Australasia’s leading business schools and one of 30 in the world accredited by all three global business school accreditation agencies – AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA. In 2004 and again in 2007 Waikato Management School was ranked by the New Zealand Government’s Tertiary Education Commission as New Zealand’s leading research business school.
Mike’s scholarly and business interests embrace peak performance, inspirational leadership, value creation and accountability. He has supervised fourteen doctoral students to graduation and has numerous publications with a wide range of co-authors including eight books and more than 150 journal articles and papers. Mike is co-author of the best selling book Peak Performance: business lessons from the world’s best sports organisations, Harper Collins, London 2000. His most recent book Sustainable Peak Performance with Helga Pratt was published in 2010 in New Zealand by Pearson. His book Auditing Theory and Practice was first published in 1980 and now in its 6th edition [now with co-authors] remains the standard New Zealand text on Auditing.
Mike and his wife Helga are keen blue water sailors and have sailed most of the world’s oceans. Their daughter Susie holds a masters in Fine Arts, is a new media artist, designer and academic working in Sydney, Australia, and their son Martin is a creative director in interactive design working in London. When not pursuing their shared academic and business interests Helga and Mike enjoy proximity to nature on their waterfront, bush-clad home in New Zealand’s magical Bay of Islands.
