Dr Mike Pratt, FCA.
Dr Mike Pratt is a business advisor, author, professional director, and former Dean of the Waikato Management School, University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. He is a fellow, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and Senior Lead Reviewer for the NZ Government State Services Commissions' Performance Improvement Framework.
Mike has provided advice and training to a range of global and New Zealand organisations for the last twenty years in peak performance, organisation development, leadership and sustainability. He has provided peak performance development services to the chief executives and top management teams of leading global corporations, such as Saatchi & Saatchi, Procter & Gamble, Carrefour, Visa, Novartis, Braun and Publicis Groupe.
Mike's company Sustainable Enterprise Ltd provides performance development services to high growth export led companies and government agencies in New Zealand to assist them to clarify their purpose, business models and strategy and develop inspirational leadership. The company has assisted more than 200 organisations in recent years, including 15 New Zealand government ministries and agencies.
Mike was born in Cambridge, England and obtained a BA Economics (Honours) from Sheffield University, a master's degree from the University of Witwatersrand and a doctorate in Finance from the University of South Africa. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1972 in London. After working in the motor industry for several years in the UK, he joined the academic world.
He moved to New Zealand in 1986 as a Chairperson of Accounting and Finance at Massey University before joining the University of Waikato as its dean of business in 1990. He served in that role until 2007. During his tenure as Dean, the Waikato Management School became one of Australias leading business schools and one of 30 in the world accredited by all three global business school accreditation agencies - AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA. In 2004 and again in 2007, Waikato Mangement School was ranked by the New Zealand Government's Tertiary Education Commission as New Zealands leading research business school.
Mikes scholarly and business interests embrace peak performance, inspirational leadership, value creation and accountability. he as supervised 14 doctoral students to graduation and has numerous publications with a wide range of co-authors, eight books and more than 150 journal articles and papers. Mike is co-author of the best-selling business book Peak Performance: business lessons from the worlds best sports organisations, Harper Collins, London 2000. A sequel Sustainable Peak Performance with Helga Pratt was published in 2010 in New Zealand by Pearson.
In 2017 Mike was elected a Fellow by the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand Council, an honour awarded to members who have given outstanding service to or who have brought distinction to the profession. Mike and his wife Helga are keen blue water sailors and have sailed most of the world' oceans. Their daughter Susie holds a doctorate in environmental humanities and is a new media artist, designer and academic working in Sydney, Australia. Their son Martin is a creative director in interactive design working in Berlin. When not persuing their shared academic and business interests, Helga and Mike enjoy living close to nature and the sea in Russell in New Zealands magical Bay of Islands.
