Villa Maria

Single Vineyard Seddon Pinot Noir

Vineyard Description

The Seddon Vineyard is nestled on the southern bank of Marlborough's Awatere River. This warm, sheltered site is tempered by a cool evening breeze running off the slopes of Mt. Tapuae-o-Uenuku, creating perfect ripening conditions.
The fruit is grown on two terraces, sheltered from the cold southerly which results in a warm mesoclimate.  The fruit is from a mix of clones and pruning techniques.  During the growing season, extensive canopy manipulation is carried out including shoot and bunch thinning, and leaf plucking.

Winemaking

Fruit was hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. While it fermented the fruit was hand plunged. Following pressing  and malolactic fermentation, the wine was moved to French oak barrels (25% of which were new), where it spent the next 14 months maturing. The wine was then minimally fined with egg whites, minimally filtrated and bottled.

Winemaker's Comment

This wine has been gently crafted using a natural approach to winemaking. A seductive bouquet comprising perfumed, ripe cherries, red fruit and enticing floral aromas, it is concentrated and displays deep layers of fruit. An elegant and refined wine with an alluring velvety texture, it is stylish and complex, with finesse and a harmonious balance.
