PRONUNCIATION

"Ar-NAYZ"

VINEYARD DESCRIPTION & BACKGROUND

Originating from Italy, this 'little rascal' (the Italian translation of Arneis named due to its difficulty to cultivate) is an extremely rare variety producing limited volumes of wine from select vineyard sites around the world. The majority of Villa Maria’s Arneis vines were planted in 2008 in free draining silt and sand soils in Hawkes Bay, and yielded their first crop in 2010. Additional vineyards include a very stony site on recent alluvial gravels and a small hillside vineyard which must be harvested by hand.

WINEMAKER’S COMMENT

The aromas of this unique and charming wine are intriguing with an intense and freshly scented array of citrus, honeysuckle and mineral characters gradually coming to the fore. The palate is very approachable and has tangy acidity, leading the wine to a delicate and dry styled finish with excellent length.

SERVING SUGGESTION

Ideally suited as an apéritif or served with fresh seafood, particularly shallow fried squid served with a squeeze of lemon. A refreshing alternative to Sauvignon Blanc, this unique wine features moderate alcohol and is very approachable, making it an excellent match with food and any social occasion.
