Trophy for Villa Maria's Little Rascal

Villa Maria’s ‘little rascal’ – the Private Bin East Coast Arneis 2013 – has picked up the ‘Other Aromatic Varieties’ Trophy at the Avenues International Aromatic Wine Competition 2013.

Wednesday 16 October

Villa Maria’s ‘little rascal’ – the Private Bin East Coast Arneis 2013 – has picked up the ‘Other Aromatic Varieties’ Trophy at the Avenues International Aromatic Wine Competition 2013.

Arneis is an extremely rare white grape affectionately known as the ‘little rascal’ in its original home of Italy due to its reputation as being temperamental and notoriously difficult to grow. Despite this, Arneis has made itself comfortably at home in Villa Maria’s vineyards and has been a consistent performer since the first wines were made in 2010.

Senior Auckland Winemaker Nick Picone said it’s a great wine with a fast growing following.

“Arneis is lovely as an aperitif and goes extremely well with fresh and light cuisine. We’re finding those looking for something a little different are really enjoying this new and exciting varietal. We’re stoked that it has picked up a trophy and hope this will entice more people to give it a go,” he said.

Villa Maria also picked up gold medals for the Villa Maria Reserve Wairau Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2013 and the Villa Maria Single Vineyard Seddon Pinot Gris 2013.

In total the competition received 429 entries. The Judges awarded 44 Gold 87 Silver and 171 Bronze medals.
