A diamond-themed celebration marked Air New Zealand’s 30th year of hosting the Wine Awards and the Viaduct Centre in Auckland was electric with excitement. Villa Maria was amongst New Zealand’s top winemakers, looking to add to their 11 golds that were previously awarded (out of the total 91). High honours began with Villa Maria receiving 5 Elite Gold Medals, 31% of the Elite Gold Medal categories, for Champion Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Exhibition White, Exhibition Red and Champion Merlot, Cabernet and Blends.

Villa Maria was also incredibly thrilled to receive the Trophy for the Villa Maria Reserve Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Hawke’s Bay 2014, accepted by Winemaker Nick Picone. The Air New Zealand Wine Awards caps off an exceptional year of awards for Villa Maria; to date the winery has received 28 Trophies and 80 Golds.

“Our Winemaking and Viticulture teams are naturally thrilled with the result from the prestigious Air New Zealand Wine Awards,” says Villa Maria Founder and CEO Sir George Fistonich. “These awards have special significance within the industry and Villa Maria has a long history of success in the competition going right back to its inception.”

Nick Picone, Villa Maria Group Chief Winemaker agrees and says he’s extremely pleased with the results and particularly with how the trophy award winning wine performed. “The Reserve Gimblett Gravels Cabernet-Merlot 2014 is a real ‘rock’ in our range and is incredibly consistent year after year. Having established a proven track record with accolades over the years, we are thrilled to continue this success with the 2014 vintage. Increasing vine age and a sensitive approach between the vineyard and winery mean this wine is continually getting better and will keep fans of fragrant, supple yet dense Hawkes Bay Cab-Merlot blends very happy indeed. If you aren’t familiar with this wine, you need to seek it out and see what all the fuss is about.”

This year, the Air New Zealand Wine Awards judged over 1,400 wines over the course of three days.
